Boris' Birthday Bash! - Saturday April 19. All ballroom dancers are invited to help Claudette and Boris McCubbin celebrate Boris' 40th birthday! Music will be by Brad Walker Orchestra (ballroom) followed by The Party Boys (DJ/swing). Theme is "a 1940's Extravaganza" (The "Roaring 40's" can include flappers, zoot suits, etc.) In lieu of presents, please bring a canned or boxed item for the Second Harvest food bank. Spring Fling Guest Festival and Top Teacher contest: Tell your friends about our $25 guest special (1 private, 1 group, and 1 party for $25) and you could win prizes! Ask your instructor for details.

Week 2 (March 7th): Luau party -- wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt, grass skirt, or tropical outfit.

Week 3 (March 14th): St. Patrick's party with the Brad Walker Orchestra. Feel free to share your favorite libation, and remember to wear a touch of green!

Week 4 (March 21st): Wacky Tacky party -- spandex, poofy hair, wild colors. Earn points for your instructor in the Top Teacher contest by bringing food to the party. You can count on some disco numbers!

Week 5 (March 28th): Country Hoedown -- hats, bandanas, and bolo ties (no boots on the dancefloor, please). Here's your chance to brush off your twostep and electric slide!

Week 6 (April 4th): Toga party -- wear your basic sheet, or get creative as a Roman soldiers or figures from mythology.

Week 7 (April 11th): Semi-formal finale of Top Teacher contest. Prizes, photos, and the Brad Walker Orchestra.


Heartsong Gala for the Arts This charity benefit funds access to art and music for disabled children. There will be a "battle of the big bands" with the Streamliners vs the UT Jazz Orchestra. KSDA will run a "Jack & Jill" swing contest and Academy Ballroom will run ballroom and latin dance contests during this evening event at Rothchild's Catering. There will also be dance costume contests. Tickets for the entire evening (including dance contest entries and dinner) are $100/person. Tickets for the dance and band battle only are $25/person, $45/couple (with contest entries costing $20).

See us on TV: Watch EARLY Friday morning (starting at 6 a.m.) for Academy Ballroom on WVLT's East Tennessee This Morning show. We will be helping ETTAC promote the Heartsong Gala.

Instructors in the News! Academy Ballroom Instructors Richard and Alisha taught a group class and performed at the International Day of Dance at Morristown College. Go to www.citizentribune.com and look in the left hand "local videos" column for "International Day of Dance" to see clips from the class, their performance, and an interview.

USA Dance is back! The Knoxville Chapter has gone to one dance a month (first Saturdays) rotating among the 3 studios. The first dance back at Academy Ballroom will be March 1.

Academy Ballroom signature cocktail: For the anniversary celebration, Andy at Tennessee Bartenders came up with a custom cocktail: the Academy Ballroom! The recipe begins: "Combine all ingredients but grenadine in shaker and do the cha cha..."

Sweethearts Dance: Friday, February 15! Have one final celebration of Valentine's Day with our regular Friday dance. Admission is $10/person, $15/couple.

See Julia and Igor on TV! If you missed the studio show Feb. 2, you can see Julia Ivleva and Igor Litvinov on "America's Ballroom Challenge" on PBS (WETP/WKOP -- channel 2 broadcast or cable, 9316 on DishNetwork). The show will air at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13. It will be repeated at 5 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15 and Monday, Feb. 18. It will also air on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m., 8 p.m., and 11 p.m., and again at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17. The original performance of their showdance finale is posted on youtube. NO PARTY at studio February 8! Instead we are encouraging everyone to go to the Welcome Dance and Show at the USA Dance North Central Regionals, being held at Knoxville's downtown Marriott February 9-10. The show is by Alain Doucet and Anik Jolicouer, 5 time world champions -- you don't want to miss this! Tickets are $20 and are available at the studio or online at the USA Dance website. For our amateur couples, this is one of the best priced comps around. For everyone, there will be some amazing amateur dancing to be seen on Saturday evening in the championship sessions.

MARDI-GRAS PARTY! Friday, February 1 is our Marti-gras party--the kickoff of our month long anniversary celebaration. Wear your wildest party outfit and join us to party New Orleans style, with lots of merengue, salsa, samba, and dixieland sounds.

Richard Bull New Instructor & New Group Classes
Welcome aboard to our new instructor Richard Bull. At 6'2", Richard is our tallest instructor. He will be teaching the Tuesday night Tango group, part of our new lineup of group classes starting in January: Tango, Samba, ChaCha/Swing, Beginning Ballroom, and both Beginning and Advanced Salsa! The Brad Walker Orchestra is back at Academy Ballroom for our Christmas Party! We will have our Christmas Party on December 14 from 8-11 p.m. Tickets are $15/person or $25/couple. There will be a cash bar, light hors d'oeuvres, doorprizes, and performances.

ABK dancers in the news! WATE TV aired a story (Tuesday night 11/27) about the impact of "Dancing with the Stars" on the local dance scene. Several of our dancers are featured in the spot (Johnny Tang, the Hampton girls, Gary and Maureen, Lloyd and Angelia, and Robert Mitchell teaching the reporter, Ann Keil, to dance). Wanna dance like Prince Charming? Johnny Tang is unavailable for the Friday group classes during November, because he is responsible for the dance scenes in the Oak Ridge Play House production of "Cinderella"! Opening night for this play is Friday 11/16, with the last show on Friday 11/30. On a related note, Johnny is having "Competition Prep" for Academy Ballroom students instead of his normal group classes on Saturdays 11/10 and 11/17. (Johnny's groups will resume on December 2, after the competition).

NEW time for Friday parties! To go with our upcoming "dinner and dancing" promotion, starting November 9th, our Friday night parties will be from 8 p.m. till 10:30 p.m. -- mark your calendar to remember the new time.

Latin Dance Workshop! Brian Jolly is back, and he's bringing Alison Epsom, star of stage and screen. She's been featured in plays, musicals, and dance festivals. Our fall Costume Party will be held on October 26 with a LIVE Band--The Streamliners! Wear your best swing era costume (anything from monsters to movie stars) and compete in our costume contest.
Admission is $12.50/person, $20/couple, $10 for UT students or KSDA members. There will be a costume contest, doorprizes and a short swing dance contest.

Tickets are still available for the Black & White Ball, to be held Saturday, October 20, from 8-11 p.m. Music will be provided by the Brad Walker Orchestra. We now offer Belly Dance, taught by Debka Ashton, Wednesdays at 11 a.m. A 6 week series is $75. Debbie (who performs using the name "Debka") has studied belly dance with top instructors throughout the world, including Dahlena, Ibrahim Farrar, Jillina, Aziza, Zahra Zuhair, Rachel Brice, and Amir Thelib. The first belly dance teacher in Knoxville, Debbie began teaching at the University of Tennessee in 1975. Ladies, this is a safe, healthy exercise for all ages and levels! Club ORNL dance opened to friends of employees: The Club ORNL dance scheduled for September 22, has been opened up to include friends of ORNL employees (e.g., if you know Johnny, Heather, Bev, Betsy, or Lloyd, to name a few, you qualify). This event will include heavy hors d'ouevres, cash bar, group classes by Johnny and Heather Tang, and a few exhibition performances during the evening of dance.

Samba/ChaCha workshop with Brian Jolly: On September 23, we will have Brian Jolly (ranked #2 in the World) here for a workshop (2:30-4 p.m.) and a limited number of private coachings. Belly Dance Wednesdays: Debka Ashton (of "Night at the Oasis") is offering belly dance instruction at 11 a.m. each Wednesday; classes are $75 for a 6 week series. Ladies, this is a great way to exercise AND to reduce stress! Advance registration is recommended. more information


Salsa Fusion Tuesdays: Papus Keita is teaching club style salsa Tuesdays at 7 p.m., followed by the slow, romantic Bachata at 8 p.m. -- Papus has placed in the top three in the last three Salsa competitions he entered. Don't miss these new groups! Each class is $10/person or $15/couple.

Bridal Show WINNERS: The winners of the 2007 Knoxville Bridal Show Wedding Package are Megan H. and her fiance Jake B. -- Jake and Megan get 5 private lessons and 5 parties to help them get ready for their wedding dance.

Swinging Sundays: We have added a regular Sunday party -- East Coast/West Coast Swing Jam! This high energy party ($10/person) starts at 7 p.m. and will feature DJ'd music by David Valentine. Dances will be East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing and a new "East Coast Blues" dance. Come at 6 p.m. and take a group class on club-style swing for only $5 (or get the group class for FREE if you bring in the flyer).
